In the world of plastic machinery, Blown Film Extrusion is one of the most commonly used methods of manufacturing plastic films, usually, this is more applied to the packaging industry.

The process involves extruding plastic through a circular die, followed by a bubble-like expansion. The main advantages of film making by this process include the ability to:
 
  • Produce tube (both flat and reinforced) in one operation.
  • Manage the width and thickness of the film by controlling the air volume in the bubble, the extruder outlet, and the drag speed.
  • Avoid final defects, such as trim fit by edges and uneven temperature that can result from flat film extrusion.
  • Biaxial orientation capacity (allowing consistency of mechanical properties).
  • Manufacture co-extruded multilayer films for high barrier applications such as food packaging.
 
The plastic melt is extruded through an annular die, usually vertical, to form a thin-walled tube. Air is introduced through a hole in the center of the die to blow the tube like a balloon. Mounted on top of the die, a high-speed air ring blows over the hot film to cool it.
The film tube continues upward, continuously cooling until it passes through pressure rollers where the tube is flattened to create what is known as a flat film tube.

This flat or collapsed tube is then carried back through the extrusion "tower" through more rollers. At the highest outlet lines, the air inside the bubble is also exchanged. This is known as internal bubble cooling.
The most commonly used resins are polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE) and their copolymers, but a wide variety of other materials can be used as blends with these resins or as individual layers in a multilayer film structure.

  • Food packaging
  • Heat shrinkable films
  • Bags
  • Barrier films (with materials such as PA or EVOH)
  • Greenhouse films
  • Hot-melt films
